This little tutorial should show you the capabilities of the program, especially the possibility to create web pages. In this chapter I want you to show the summary functions.
What is a summary function? It collects the data and does not list every launch in an row, instead you get an row for all launches in a row. Lets retake the easiest example - a summary over the date.
Don't select any Launch, simply download the table. But check the Option "Exclude Secondary Payloads" in the Export menu. Now go the Summary menu and choose "Summary by Date in HTML". As usual you have fill up the data of some dialogs , like the selection of the filename, the title of the table and so one. This is explained in the Tutorial 1.
You will get this Table. Each row has three columns: One for the year and one for the launches in this year and the last for the successful launches per year. When you have checked the menu Entry "Include Success Starts" you will get a forth column: It will hold the percentage of successful launches in this year.
This function also works with CSV Data. And of course you also can use different colorize effects and use it for a sub selection. If you want for example a log only of the Delta Launches simply make the Selection "Delta" as Launch vehicle and the start the Summary by Date function.
The next important possibility to summarize is to count the numbers of launches for a field of identical entries. For example you can group the Ariane Launches: Select "Ariane" and Launch Vehicle as selection. Your table will hold now all Ariane launches.
Now go the Summary Menu and select "Summary by Field in HTML". A new dialog will appear. You have there to say which field you want to use. Preselected is the field on the selection dialog. Normally its the most used field. The other options I will explain in a sample. For a first try don't check the "Group by first word" section neither type in anything in the "Group by ... chars" edit field.
You will get a table like this (depending on your HTML colors settings).
Launch Vehicle | Launches | Success | Launch success [%] |
---|---|---|---|
Ariane 1 | 11 | 9 | 81,82 |
Ariane 2 | 6 | 5 | 83,33 |
Ariane 3 | 11 | 10 | 90,91 |
Ariane 40 | 7 | 7 | 100,00 |
Ariane 42L | 13 | 13 | 100,00 |
Ariane 42P | 15 | 14 | 93,33 |
Ariane 44L | 40 | 39 | 97,50 |
Ariane 44LP | 26 | 25 | 96,15 |
Ariane 44P | 15 | 15 | 100,00 |
Ariane 5ECA | 13 | 12 | 92,31 |
Ariane 5ESV | 1 | 1 | 100,00 |
Ariane 5G | 16 | 13 | 81,25 |
Ariane 5G+ | 3 | 3 | 100,00 |
Ariane 5GS | 5 | 5 | 100,00 |
Summary | 182 | 171 | 93,96 |
You see, that each difference in the launcher field you will get a new row. This is a problem, for which launch log offers you some solutions, but for some cases there is no solution existing. for example the naming conventions in the Titan, Atlas and Thor-Delta Launches are so much different over the decades that it is hard to group the launches by family.
To specify the grouping function you can use the two functions on the Field selection dialog. When you check "Group by first word". check box the list is group by the first word, ending with the first space. This can be useful when you for example select all Intelsat launches and the you want group them by launcher family:
Launch Vehicle | Launches | Success | Launch success [%] |
---|---|---|---|
Ariane | 30 | 29 | 96,67 |
Atlas | 10 | 10 | 100,00 |
Chang | 1 | 0 | 0,00 |
Commercial | 2 | 2 | 100,00 |
Proton | 5 | 5 | 100,00 |
SLV | 20 | 18 | 90,00 |
Thor | 12 | 10 | 83,33 |
Zenit | 1 | 1 | 100,00 |
Summary | 81 | 75 | 92,59 |
You see here also the Disadvantage of this method: Since only the first word is used you have as names only the first word - "Chang" for "Chang Cheng", "Commercial" for "Commercial Titan". On the other Side: here are now all Ariane Launches (which were made on different models) are summarized in one entry.
For a more specific way you can use the "Group by ... chars" field it works on two ways:
The fist one: Type in there the number of chars which are used to group. For example when you type in "8" the first 8 chars will used as grouping criteria. this is only useful, when the names are starting with all the same words. When you use "9" for the Ariane Launches you will get this table:
Launch Vehicle | Launches | Success | Launch success [%] |
---|---|---|---|
Ariane 1 | 11 | 9 | 81,82 |
Ariane 2 | 6 | 5 | 83,33 |
Ariane 3 | 11 | 10 | 90,91 |
Ariane 40 | 7 | 7 | 100,00 |
Ariane 42 | 28 | 27 | 96,43 |
Ariane 44 | 81 | 79 | 97,53 |
Ariane 5E | 14 | 13 | 92,86 |
Ariane 5G | 24 | 21 | 87,50 |
Summary | 182 | 171 | 93,96 |
9 Chars - That's the length of the phrase "Ariane 40", but not of the length "Ariane 5 ECA". It is meaning that all Ariane 5 G Launches (Ariane 5 G, G+ and GS are summarized.
The second is to set an Example: Type in an Text, the length of the Text is used as an Example. Let try it. Type in in the "Group by ... chars" field the phrase "Ariane 5" - this is 8 characters long and will result in grouping after the main family models:
Launch Vehicle | Launches | Success | Launch success [%] |
---|---|---|---|
Ariane 1 | 11 | 9 | 81,82 |
Ariane 2 | 6 | 5 | 83,33 |
Ariane 3 | 11 | 10 | 90,91 |
Ariane 4 | 116 | 113 | 97,41 |
Ariane 5 | 38 | 34 | 89,47 |
Summary | 182 | 171 | 93,96 |
The last grouping function, grouping by Date and Field will be explained in the last, fifth tutorial, together with charts.
